The Largest and Most Popular of the British Virgin Islands, Tortola is beautiful and unspoiled

Tortola, British Virgin Islands, with its 13,000 residents is probably most famous for its offshore offerings that have put the BVI on the map as one of the most popular and favorable offshore tax havens in the World. But, Tortola has much to offer every traveler.

Its southern shore is luciously green and mountainous, with peaks covered in frangipani and ginger; its northern coast has glorious white-sand beaches, many of which are protected by cays, and an abundance of mango and banana groves.

The main town on this 12-by-3 mile Island is the colony's capital, Road Town, with a population of 2,000 or so.

Tourism is relatively new to Road Town, so it is still more like a subdued village than a sophisticated resort. The West Indian charm of its colorful wood and stone buildings enhances its appearance. Several colonial buildings have been preserved, and delightful shops line main street.
